Teen entrepreneurs in the making – thanks to JA and the Boys & Girls Clubs

ja-logoRecently the TBTF teamed up with the Junior Achievement program to help youth at a local club develop a technology-based company. Teens from the Interbay Boys & Girls Club are presently going through a ten-week program developed by Junior Achievement to create a business from beginning to end. The teens will vote on company officers, choose a name, develop a product to sell and, eventually, make a profit. The entire experience will be captured on video, in a “reality show” format.

Three volunteers from local companies and members of TBTF — Jack Rybicki (LarsonAllen CPA’s), Robert Riddell (Alvarez & Marsal) and Kathy Killingsworth (Tribridge Consulting) — are helping the team with the process. The pilot has been underway for two weeks, and the mentors teaching the program are very eager to see the results. This breakthrough program will help create future entrepreneurs and will eventually extend to other clubs.ja2

New reading program is music to club members’ ears

tune-in

Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay has recently collaborated with Electronic Learning Corporation and the University of South Florida to pilot a new computer-based reading program.  The program is called “TUNEin to READING” and incorporates reading to music.

Using the program, club members sing the words they are reading. The program calculates the reader’s singing pitch, and the reader continues singing until he/she achieves a score of 75 or better. This program has been piloted at three clubs to date (North Tampa, West Tampa and Nick Capitano Clubs), and the youth involved have improved their reading an average of two grade levels. This is an excellent example of using technology to help our youth.

Club member uses technology to DJ

dj-jay-d-1

In a drive to increase teen membership, Boys and Girls Clubs have been hosting weekly Teen Dances at various locations. One of the teen members of the Joe & Anne Garcia Salesian Club has even been hired as a DJ at these events. His name is J.D. Vera but he goes by “DJ JAY-D.”

DJ JAY-D plays “clean versions” of recent R&B, Hip Hop and Reggaeton music. He is very technologically savvy and uses a laptop with DJ software and digital turntables when he performs. His appearances have become a big hit with the teens at the dances, and the organization pays him for his services through funds from a National Teen Outreach program.

“Boys and Girls Clubs has given me the opportunity to share something that I like doing and make money while doing it.” said J.D. when asked about his recent popularity.  He is planning to start his own company and wants to begin performing at BGCA Teen Events nationwide.

NFL donates HOPSports system to youth

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers visited the Jim Walter/Interbay Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay

The NFL/United Way “Hometown Huddle” is an NFL-wide day of service that provides NFL players, coaches and staff from each team the opportunity to participate in a variety of community-service activities.  This year as part of this program, the Buccaneers visited a local Boys & Girls Club to introduce a new interactive computer system.  At the event, long snapper Andrew Economos, linebacker Adam Hayward, cornerbacks Elbert Mack and Phillip Buchanon and tight end John Gilmore helped debut the new HOPSports Training System to a group of 100 young members of the Interbay Boys & Girls Club.

The HOPSports system, which was the first of multiple systems that will be donated to Bay Area Boys and Girls Clubs by the Buccaneers, United Way and HOPSports, features a projector and a large video screen that displays exercise routines, plays music, and offers an all-around interactive experience that is fun, exciting and engaging, but also gets heart rates up and promotes fitness.

The five Bucs that attended split the children into groups and helped them run through rotating stations with the guidance of the new system.  As music played and images flashed across the large projector screen showing the proper way to perform various balance, stretching, skipping and jumping drills, the players worked up a sweat along with the youth.

IBM community service day at Tampa Bay area Boys and Girls Club

The IBM community day was a huge success.  Twenty-two employees from the IBM Software Group

Southeast Business Unit participated at the Interbay Boys and Girls Club on Thursday October 23, 2008.  They formed five teams, each of which had a goal for the day.  There was a frenzy of activity during the day and it was an excellent team building event for the IBM employees.

By the end of the day, the teams had accomplished an amazing amount of work: they painted all of the hallways/stairwells, removed old computers from the technology center/installed new ones, pressure washed sidewalks, removed weeds from the front entrance, created a new area for a digital arts center, assembled desks, and organized the computer storage area.  It was amazing to see how much they accomplished in one day!  Our youth will benefit immensely from IBM’s hard work.  Thank you IBM, we are looking forward to your next community day.

TBTF Tech Jam 2008 is a big success

The Tampa Bay Technology Forum (TBTF) hosted the seventh annual Tech Jam fundraiser on Thursday, August 7th at the St. Pete Times Forum.  It was a huge success and everyone had a great time while raising money for our youth!  The ‘Party With A Purpose’ featured live music from Ken Block and Drew Copeland of Sister Hazel, food, beverages and a silent auction.

All proceeds from this event fund TBTF Foundation initiatives, which are designed to change the lives of the youth in our community.  One such program is the CompuTer-rific program, providing area Boys and Girls Clubs with computers, equipment and technicians to complete state of the art computer labs.
